Topographic Contour

Contour mapping developed out of French and British military surveying in the late 1700s, originally as a tool for understanding terrain before anyone had to move through it. Every line represents a fixed elevation, and the distance between them tells you how hard the climb is going to be. It's the same information a course architect reads when they're deciding where the green goes.
